Knowledge Of The Personal God

Mar 22 2002

Guna is essential for this type of universal realisation. Hence, the Hindu temples throughout India have various deities whose quality is represented in various forms, installed for the purpose of kindling the devotees dominant quality (which quality is represented in the form of the personal deity). Our temples represent this type of worship to acquire universal knowledge according to their capability. This way is called the 'saguna bhrama upasana'. The four path of God realisation are, 1.Karma yoga, 2.Bhakti yoga, 3.Rajayoga and 4.Gnana yoga. To achieve results in the worship of personal God, the prescribed path is Bhakti yoga and Raja yoga.

Another option to the practitioner is the 'nirguna bhrama upasana' of Hinduism. The meaning of 'nirguna bhrama' is, God has got the form, but like water he has no quality. We practice this way to attain absolutism called 'mukti' (nirvana) or liberation. Some may practice and aspire with the union of the total universal energy, knowledge of the matter world and become one with absolutism. Gnana yoga is the prescribed path for the 'nirguna bhrama upasana'.

The natural enquiry of the reader will be about Karma yoga and what is it for? Karma yoga means, do your worldly duties with duty consciousness. Your duty itself is God. This is the principle of Hinduism. Its result is, the karma yogi or the duty conscious person can have the vision of all Personal deities.

To know the knowledge of the created principle, created by the creator is one of the goal of Hinduism. Without knowing the universe it is not possible for anybody to realise God's creation. The above mentioned four paths and the personal deity worship, i.e., saguna bhrama and nirguna bhrama upasanas, are prescribed in our scriptures.
